One of the most common searched for rug pads is rug pads for hardwood floors. More and more people seem to be installing hardwood floors in their home and more and more people need to protect their hardwood floors. It is a shame to become victim to damaged hardwood floors due to the wrong rug pad. Many of the big box store rug pads can be used on hardwood floors, yet these are also the ones that have been known to damage hardwood floors.

Choosing the right rug pad for your hardwood floor can be simple if you follow a few guidelines. First, the rug pad should not contain any chemicals or adhesives that can stick to and damage the hardwood floor. This rule eliminates many of the rug pads that are available as most contain some sort of adhesives. Next, a rug pad for hardwood floors should be solid, as opposed to an open weave one with homes, in order to prevent anything from above to damage or scratch the hardwood floor. So, if it is a non-slip rug pad you need for your hardwood floor, make sure the rug pad has natural rubber that is NOT glued on to the felt. If you do not have a slipping issue, then a pure recycled felt rug pad is excellent.

Ultra Premium felt rug pad for hardwood floors is one of the best rug pads to use on a hardwood floor. Available at Rug Pad Corner

What separates one felt and rubber rug pad from another is the material used and the nature in which the rubber is adhered to the rug pad. Rubber can be sprayed on, glued on or heat pressed to the felt surface of a rug pad. The best rug pad for hardwood floors containing rubber is one where the layer of rubber is a natural, solid rubber that is heat pressed to the felt part of the rug pad. The glues in other rug pads can smell and cause the rubber to break down to make it a temporary rug pad. Ultra Premium felt and rubber rug pad for hardwood floors is one of the better quality rug pads that contains real rubber without the use of glues or adhesives. A close look at the front of this rug pad shows a textured recycled felt surface to hold the rug and a natural rubber lower surface that contains a unique texture to grab to the floor. Upon trying to pull the rubber from the felt, it is obvious that there is no glue involved, and this is what is safest for hardwood floors and rugs.

When compared to other felt and rubber rug pads that we found, Ultra Premium stands out with the best material and composition. A common rug pad available contains a very slight texture within the rubber, not nearly as large as that of Ultra Premium, and this texture concerns us at it will not prevent slipping for as long as it should. When looking at a comparison of rug pads for hardwood floors, the attention to detail in Ultra Premium is quite evident.

Superior felt rug pad from Rug Pad Corner is an excellent rug pad for hardwood floors when slipping is not an issue.

Now, let’s look at a rug pad for hardwood floors that does not prevent slipping, more for room size rugs or rugs with furniture on them. This recycled felt jute rug pad does not contain glue, adhesive or rubber and is one of the best rug pads for hardwood floors under rugs that do not have a slipping issue. Superior felt rug pad is made of compact recycled felt into a 3/8 of an inch thick rug pad that protects rug and any hardwood floor.

Superior felt rug pad is extremely dense and this is what makes it resist any stress to occur to the rug and the hardwood floor. A rug pad is only worth as much as it can protect the rug and floor and Superior rates extremely high in protection. Since it is 3/8 of an inch thick, Superior also is one of the most comfortable rug pads that can be found, not to mention that it also seems to reduce noise and sound.

Superior felt rug pad is manufactured in a 40 ounce quality, perhaps the highest and most dense quality available in a felt jute rug pad. Unlike lower density rug pads, Superior does not mat down and will resist and protect for many, many years.

Rug pads for hardwood floors are often taken for granted. We place the rug pad under the rug and forget about it. The problem occurs in the future when we need to lift the rug and rug pad. It is important to see a damage free hardwood floor, regardless of how long the rug pad has been down. Since we don’t often look under our rugs to see the rug pads, it is very important to choose the best rug pad for hardwood floors from the start. This will save any surprises once the rug is lifted in the future.

Add this to the many cases of a rug pads sticking to hardwood floors! If you encounter your rug pad marking or sticking to your hardwood floor, there are some things that can be done, yet they do have some repercussions.

One of the most common rug pads that sticks to and damages hardwood floors is a non slip rug pad with an open weave design, one that resembles a waffle look. Contrary to much belief, most of these types of rug pads are NOT rubber. Real rubber is safe for hardwood floors. The rug pads that mark the floor are made of polyester, pvc or nylon. Most of them are coated with a sticky adhesive to give them a non slip function. This adhesive is what can rub off the pad and onto your floor.

If you have had this happen to your floor, there are a few things that might remove the pad. Nail polish remover and paint thinner both may dissolve the rug pad and help you then wipe it off the floor. The only problem with these treatments is that they may wear off the finish of your floor.

If you want to try this type of removal, test a small area of your floor first. Using a rag, blot some of the nail polish remover or paint thinner onto a small, hidden section of your hardwood floor. Wipe it as if you were trying to remove a stuck rug pad. Wait about 30 minutes and check the spot. If all looks well, then chances are it is safe to proceed. If you notice that part of the floor lighter, then you are removing the finish of the floor and do not proceed. Another good test is to check the rag after you wipe the floor and see if the floor color comes off to the rag.

In the worst case, you will need to either refinish your floor or simply get another rug pad to cover up the damage. The best prevention to a rug pad sticking to hardwood floors is to get the right rug pad. Inexpensive rug pads offered in a bag are usually the ones that can cause damage. If it is a non slip rug pad you need, spend a little more and be sure it is real rubber. If you do not need a non slip rug pad, then a recycled jute rug pad is great and completely harmless to any floor.

A rug pad for hardwood floors should be two things. First, it should be safe for hardwood floors. Next, it should protect hardwood floors by preventing damage to the floor.

There are two rug pads that are rated as safe and best for hardwood floors. One is a felt jute rug pad that does not contain any chemicals, latex, glue or adhesive. The other is a felt and natural rubber rug pad that contains only real rubber, not imitation rubber. These two rug pads are great for hardwood floors as they are safe and they prevent damage.

Superior felt jute rug pad

Superior felt jute rug pad for hardwood floors
This rug pad is made in a needle punched construction and in a 40 ounce weight. This means there are 40 ounces of fiber per square yard of rug pad that are compressed together to form a very dense rug pad. Here, the density plays the key role in preventing damage to hardwood floors. The way this rug pad protects a hardwood floor is be resisting any pressure that can normally penetrate through the rug and to the floor. This applies to the stress of foot steps pushing down on the rug and forcing the back of a rough rug to rub against the hardwood floor, causing scratches. The resistance of this dense rug pad also plays a key role in preventing the weight of furniture from pushing through the rug to dent the hardwood floor.

Ultra Premium felt and rubber rug pad

Ultra Premium felt and rubber rug pad for hardwood floors
Like Superior, Ultra Premium is also needle punched to produce an extremely dense rug pad. Here, again, the density plays a key role in resisting any stress from pressure against the rug and to the hardwood floor. The rug pad acts as a protective barrier between the back of the rug and the hardwood floor. The fact that it is real rubber means it will not stick to or mark your hardwood floor like rubber imitations that contain a spray adhesive that rubs off to the floor.

When considering either one of these two rug pads for hardwood floors, your decision should be based on a few factors. Does your rug slip? How thick do you prefer the rug pad to be? For rugs that slip, Ultra Premium works best as the rubber side prevents slipping. This rug pad is 1/4 of an inch thick. For rugs that do not slip, Superior rug pad for hardwood floors is 3/8 of an inch thick and is truly for room size rugs or rugs with furniture holding them down. Since there is no rubber in this rug pad, it will not prevent slipping, if this is an issue.

Your hardwood floors are an investment and should be protected with the right rug pad. It is best not to skimp on a quality rug pad. The best rug pads for hardwood floors protect both rug and floor and will prove to save hundreds and thousands of dollars in potential damage to your rug and your hardwood floor.

Will the rug pad damage the hardwood floor in any way?

While there are many rug pads that are known to damage hardwood floors, there are also some that are perfectly safe. It is important to remember that for a rug pad to be safe for hardwood floors, it should not contain any adhesive. Adhesives are used in rug pads as a lower priced way to make the rug pad non slip instead of using a more costly real rubber. The problem is that these adhesives can rub off to the floor.

There is an excellent felt jute rug pad made for use on hardwood floors that does not contain any latex, adhesives or glue. While this rug pad is not a non slip pad, it fits the purpose for larger rugs or rugs with furniture holding them down. These rugs do not need a non slip rug pad.

One felt jute rug pad in particular is made from recycled fibers and is about 3/8 of an inch thick. The Superior rug pad, as it is named at Rug Pad Corner, carries several advantages for a rug pad. It protects any rug from premature wear. It protects all hardwood and wood floors from damage. It adds comfort to any hard floor and it also reduces noise where that is an issue.

Superior felt jute rug pad for hardwood floors is odorless and mold and mildew resistant. The thing about rug pads is that since they are out of sight, out of mind, it is important to have a quality one. The rug pad is not something in the home that we see everyday so it is nice to know it is doing the right job. Of course there are those $20 rug pads available yet there is no guarantee the final price of the pad won’t be hundred’s or thousand’s in damage.

If it is a quality rug pad for hardwood floors that you desire, then it is worth it to look around and perhaps spend a little more money up front to avoid possible damage to rug and floor down the road. For rubber, make sure it is real rubber and if rubber is not necessary, then a quality felt jute rug pad will fit the bill for years of safe use.
